We choose fabric based on where it’s from, how it feels, how it ages and how it looks. Aside from the actual fabric we use, we work with our patternmakers and cutters to make sure we minimise waste during cutting. The strips of fabric left over are donated to be reused by a company that makes exercise / punching bags.
We work with an incredible network of fabric merchants in Hong Kong that travel the world collecting available fabric that would otherwise be stored or disposed of. These fabrics are predominantly sourced from Italy, Japan, Korea and China. Once they are sold, they are gone forever so if you love a piece, make it yours because there is a high chance we won’t be able to get it again. Making fabric is an intense and wasteful process. There are so many beautiful rolls of fabric in the world that we can use instead of churning out more from scratch.
100% LINEN
Our linen has become one of our signature fabrics and we love manipulating it into unexpected shapes and details. We’ve taken linen away from the usual lifestyle and resort applications into day to night wear. We’ve also found a luxurious weight that is not transparent and available in a stunning array of colours. It absorbs moisture without holding bacteria and ages beautifully with every wash. Linen is one of the most sustainable of the natural fibres. Flax, the plant from which linen is made, is also extremely versatile. Every part of the flax plant is used to create a worthwhile product. Nothing is wasted and production is cost effective. A common by-product of flax is linseed oil, which is used for wood preservation, especially in varnishes, and flaxseed oil is also rich in omega 3. Flax is resilient and can grow in poor soil, using far less water in its consumption than cotton. According to the European Confederation of Linen and Hemp, “Across its lifecycle, a linen shirt uses 6.4 litres of water” compared to 2,700 litres for a cotton equivalent.
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation state that flax uses 13 times less pesticides than potatoes, but is only approximately 1% of the world’s apparel fibre consumption. We are happy to be in that 1%.
100% ORGANIC COTTON JERSEY + FRENCH TERRY
All of our Organic Cotton is GOTS Certified Fibre from India. It is then knitted and dyed in our Australian mill under the guidance of ACO (Australian Certified Organic). The mill we work with is powered by onsite industrial solar systems and they also have their own onsite water treatment plant which enable up to 80% of water to be reused for grey water applications.
100% LEATHER
Our leather styles are one of the only that we make outside of Australia. We work closely with a family run leather atelier in Pakistan that has been producing leather for generations. The leather they use is a byproduct and we only use it thoughtfully. We make timeless investment pieces that will last season after season and get better with age and care.
POLYESTER
We do use limited amounts of polyester in our collections and technology in this fibre has come a long way. We now have access to recycled yarns and we will always use polyester in styles that are meant for longevity and purpose.
